Replacement Double Glazing

Double glazed windows are made up of 2 panes of glass, separated by a spacer bar to create a gap. This gap is filled with a gas called argon which is poor conductor of heat, therefore creating a barrier between the warm room and the cold temperature outside. The unit is sealed around the edges to make the window airtight. A sealed unit is sometimes referred to as a DGU (double glazed unit). All of our sealed units are filled with Argon as standard.

If there is condensation inside the glass of your double glazing or it appears misty and foggy, this means that the sealed unit has failed. This happens when the gas inside the glazing unit has depleted, which in turn causes the warm air in your room to escape through the window.

Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Glass is cut to the size required and then its edges are ground or arrised. It then goes through a toughening furnace where the glass is heated up very quickly and then quenched and cooled very quickly. This process of taking the glass up to 750 degrees and then cooling it, changes the molecular structure of the glass and gives it a very high outer tensile strength. When broken, toughened glass breaks into small, relatively harmless pieces of glass which minimize the risk of injury. It is used in an increasing amount of applications where safety glass is required such as doors, side screens and low level glazing.

To make the decision over when to specify toughened glass easier (and homes and commercial properties safer), Building Regulations have some pretty specific guidelines. The regulations are based on the level of risk that someone (especially, although not exclusively, small children) could fall through a particular pane of glass. That risk is generally based around the height of the glazing. Any pane of glass partly or wholly less than 800mm from floor level should be safety glass (generally toughened glass is specified over laminated glass due to cost). Glass in doors below a 1500mm threshold should be toughened glass, and any glazing within 300mm of a doorway should also be toughened glass up to a height of 1500mm.

Toughened glass is required to be marked with BS6206a, this can take the form of the circular BS Kitemark or a simple line. It is also possible that the glass is laminated, which will also satisfy the requirement for safety glass, if so it is unlikely to be marked.

If within 10 years from the date of dispatch from our site an unbroken product is, through faulty manufacture, affected by material visual obscuration because of condensation on either interior surface, we will at our option, supply a replacement sealed unit or refund the original purchase price to our customer.
